Wikis for Professional Development

Although there are things abouat the Wiki that I do no favor, (like the ability to delete other's posts, or being "locked out" when someone else is editing the page) I do like being able to have multiple users update information.  Instead of sending countless emails back and forth with several updates to manager, the Wiki allows users to update information from a single site eliminating errors and maximizing time.

I believe I will incorporate Wikis in the office with staff having access to make updates, however I do not believe it is a tool I will use in the classroom.  I feel it would be difficult to manage student projects and posts with other students having access to delete or change peer postings.

  1. I definitely agree that wikis seem to be better suited for use in our professional lives than in our classrooms. And it bugs me too that we're locked out for editing when someone else is in the process of editing. I like your idea of using a wiki to have staff update a document - and I know that my district has pointed out the fact that this doesn't take up any space on our hard drives. This is only my 4th year teaching, and I've already hit capacity on my file storage drive - so I think I'll really have to think about using online storage as an option. I'm glad to hear though that I'm not the only one who is a little frustrated with this process... Thanks for your post!

  2. I think the lock out would be especially problematic if teachers were trying to use it with a class in school. You'd have to create multiple pages to have students working on different parts of a project.

I agree there are possibilities for teacher and staff use or for groups of students working with groups in another school. I believe it was UW-LaCrosse that was creating an advising site where faculty could put advising information for student use more easily than on a regular website. There were fairly limiting in who could add information.
