Using blogs in the classroom

I see instructors using blogs in the near future at my school to update students on events, contests, course information, and even a place to display their work.  Blogs can be used as out of class activities for students to work on (or work on as extra credit).  Sharing ideas and collaborating with peers offers a great learner environment for students.  I have already seen a few faculty members use blogs for some of these reasons.

  1. Working in higher ed, you can make the assumption that students will find a way to access the internet outside of class. In addition to displaying their final work, blogs might be an interesting way to follow their progress in developing a final project and providing feedback along the way. I'm using them as a way to have students provide me with a log of progress on a research paper.

Collaboration and blogs is an interesting point. In many ways, blogs are set up for one person to post and others to comment, although you can have multi-people blogs where several can post. It can spur collaboration, but often it is more of a personal diary than groupwork.
